LIBERTY KEY CLUB TO SPONSOR SERVICE WEEK JAN. 26-29.

The Liberty High School Key Club is sponsoring a week of in-school community service projects Jan. 26-29 to benefit several local charities, as well as to help students in Kenya.
"We wanted the younger kids at Liberty to have the opportunity to serve the community as we have been doing through Key Club," said Jessie Richards, a senior at Liberty. "We wanted to continue to impress on them that the time and love they show to others can truly make a difference."
The Key Club will hold a different community service project each day. All the students and teachers will an opportunity to participate. Richards and Key Club Treasurer Mirena Mendez are coordinating the week's activities with the Key Club board.
On Monday, each class will hold a penny drive. Pennies and other loose change will be collected all day. The money will be donated to Hopes Door in Caldwell.
On Tuesday, the students will bring to school gently-used clothing to be donated to local agencies.
An after-school project on Wednesday will create a quilt to be given to a family that could use a little extra warmth. Students, teacher, and family members will also make get-well cards and decorate suckers to hand out to children and adults in local hospitals.
The community service week will wrap on Thursday at 7 p.m. with a talent show and fundraiser in the gym. "Everyone in the community is invited, giving everyone a chance to participate in this special week," said Richards. High school and junior high students, as well as teachers will perform. Admission is $2 for adults, $1 for kids 12 and under. Half of the money collected from this event will be used in a variety of ways in the community, including a veteran's appreciation event. The other half will be used to purchase textbooks for an education program in Kenya.
"We thought this international aspect of the final fundraiser was valuable in demonstrating to our younger students that they can have an impact on others in another part of the world, as well as here at home," Richards said.
The Liberty Key Club has 30 members, one-third of the high school's populations. It has been involved in many community service projects since its inception last year. The annual Booker Bear Project is a favorite. Last year, the club donated more 152 bears to the effort. The group also held a Veteran's Appreciation and Vietnam Print Dedication last spring to honor veterans. They volunteered at the Veterans Appreciation Ball. As well, they painted a mural on the pediatrics floor of Mercy Medical Hospital. With other Liberty students, they took part in a Saturday cleanup of the old downtown theater in Nampa to help get it ready for refurbishment. And Richards initiated this year a Saturday Smiles program where get-well cards are made and delivered to patients in local hospitals.
As part of its charter, Liberty has a community service component. Individually, the high school students conduct at least 50 hours of community service annually.
Liberty Charter School is located at 1063 E. Lewis Lane in Nampa. The community is welcome to come by the school during the week to add to the students' efforts by dropping off pennies or clothing.
Liberty Charter School is a public school serving 400 students in kindergarten through 12th grade. For more information, call 466-7952.
